El Camino Real, named not for a city or state but after the Spanish colonial road from Mexico City to Oregon, is a diocese of approximately 50 congregations (including several missions), one upper school (York), two K-8 schools and several pre-schools. Campus ministries are found at California State University, San Jose; California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo; California State University, Monterey Bay; and the University of California at Santa Cruz. Clergy who are canonically resident and active in the Diocese include 100+ priests and 30+ deacons.

The diocese supports two Episcopal Charities, Santa Maria Urban Ministry in San Jose and Luz y Esperanza in Salinas. We also support two orders of women's religious, three prison ministries, the Church Periodical Club, Daughters of the King, the Episcopal Church Women, Integrity, and three Cursillo Servant Communities.

We worship in seven languages: Cantonese, English, Lakota, Laotian, Mandarin, Spanish, Tagalog, and Vietnamese.

From the high-tech industry in the north, to the rich agricultural valleys to the south, to the beauty of the Pacific coastline to the west, the Diocese is one of the most diverse areas in the world. The opportunities to grow and make a difference are great.

The Diocese has had two bishops since its formation: The Rt. Rev. Shannon Mallory and The Rt. Rev. Richard L. Shimpfky. Both bishops left the office under less than ideal circumstances. Most recently, Bishop Shimpfky stepped down effective March 31, 2004. The Diocese is taking strong steps to heal and examine its future direction. The ecclesiastical authority now rests with the Standing Committee.

The Rt. Rev. Sylvestre Romero, formerly Bishop of Belize, became the Assisting Bishop for the Diocese of El Camino Real on December 1, 2004. Working together, the Standing Committee and Bishop Romero have three primary goals for the interim period

• to build trust and teamwork between the Ecclesiastical Authority and diocesan and congregational leaders;
• to repair and improve diocesan structures, increasing diocesan support for congregational ministries;
• working with the people of the diocese, to develop a diocesan vision leading to the election of the Third Bishop of the Diocese of El Camino Real.

Episcopal Search

The estimated three-year process that will lead to the selection of the third Bishop of El Camino Real began in mid-2004 with enhanced Diocesan communications to the laity from the Standing Committee and others, improved financial controls, gifted new and returning staff members, self-study at the lay and clergy levels, and the understanding that this process cannot be rushed. A welcome spirit of candor, trust, and transparency is beginning to emerge that has not been present in the Diocese for a very long time. El Camino Real, que lleva el nombre no de una ciudad ni de un estado, sino de la vía colonial española que unía a Ciudad de México con el territorio de Oregon, es una diócesis conformada por 50+ congregaciones (incluyendo varias misiones), una escuela preparatoria (York), dos escuelas de educación primaria y secundaria (K-8) y varias preescolares. La diócesis tiene además ministerios universitarios en la Universidad Estatal de California en San José, la Universidad Estatal Politécnica de California en San Luis Obispo, la Universidad Estatal de California en la Bahía de Monterey y la Universidad de California en Santa Cruz. Hay en la actualidad 105 sacerdotes y 31 diáconos activos que residen canónicamente en la diócesis. Además, contamos con 16 sacerdotes activos en nuestra Diócesis pero que pertenecen a otras diócesis.

La diócesis apoya dos programas episcopales de beneficencia: el Ministerio Urbano de Santa María en San José y Luz y Esperanza en Salinas. También damos apoyo a dos órdenes de religiosas, tres ministerios carcelarios, el Church Periodical Club, los grupos Daughters of the King, Episcopal Church Women, Integrity y tres comunidades de Cursillo.

Se dice misa en siete idiomas: cantonés, español, inglés, lakota, lao, mandarín, tagalo y vietnamita.

Desde la industria de la alta tecnología al norte hasta los fértiles valles agrícolas al sur, pasando por la belleza de la costa del Pacífico, la diócesis de El Camino Real es una de las áreas más diversas del mundo. Son enormes las oportunidades de crecimiento y superación que ofrece.

La diócesis ha tenido dos obispos desde su fundación: el Reverendísimo Shannon Mallory y el Reverendísimo Richard L. Shimpfky. Ambos obispos dejaron el cargo en circunstancias menos que ideales. La dimisión del obispo Shimpfky se hizo efectiva a partir del 31 de marzo de 2004. La diócesis está tomando las medidas necesarias para sanar y para examinar su dirección futura. La autoridad eclesiástica se encuentra ahora en manos del Comité Permanente.

El Reverendísimo Sylvestre Romero, hasta esa fecha Obispo de Belice, se convirtió en Obispo Asistente de la Diócesis de El Camino Real el 1º de diciembre de 2004. En su trabajo conjunto, el Comité Permanente y el Obispo Romero han establecido tres metas principales para el período interino:

• Crear confianza y espíritu de equipo entre la autoridad eclesiástica y los líderes de las congregaciones y la diócesis;
• Reparar y mejorar las estructuras diocesanas, aumentando el apoyo de la diócesis hacia los ministerios de las congregaciones;
• Colaborar con los feligreses de la diócesis para crear una visión diocesana que conduzca a la elección del Tercer Obispo de la Diócesis de El Camino Real.

El proceso estimado de tres años que culminará con la selección del tercer obispo de El Camino Real comenzó a mediados de 2004 con un mejoramiento de las comunicaciones diocesanas entre el Comité Permanente, otros órganos rectores y el laicado, así como también con una mejora de los controles financieros, con la contratación de personal de mucho talento, algunos veteranos y otros nuevos, con programas de estudio y reflexión para clérigos y laicos y con la idea firme de que este proceso no puede tomarse a la ligera. Un grato espíritu de apertura, confianza y transparencia está empezando a surgir, el cual no se había sentido en la diócesis por mucho tiempo.
