Position Description (Appendix A)

EPISCOPAL DIOCESE OF EL CAMINO REAL
Position Description for our Third Bishop

The ministry of the bishop is to represent Christ and the Church, particularly as apostle, chief priest, and pastor of a diocese; to guard the faith, unity and discipline of the whole Church; to proclaim the word of God; to act in Christ’s name for the reconciliation of the world and the building up of the Church; and to ordain others to continue Christ’s ministry.”

Our diocese seeks a person of maturing faith and who attends to his/her spiritual well being by:

  • living a life of prayer.
  • engaging in continuing education relevant to current theological scholarship.
  • being in strong interpersonal relationships within a community of faith.
  • restoring personal energy and well-being by means of retreats and Sabbath time.
  • modeling the journey to deepening faith.

This person comes to us with demonstrated ability to:

  • serve as a rector or vicar or other parallel experience with congregational development
  • lead his/her current congregation in meeting its financial, leadership, and mission responsibilities to its diocesan community.
  • build and strengthen ministries among diverse groups.
  • increase the attendance, financial health and mission of a worshiping community.
  • speak the truth in love and provide leadership for difficult decision processes.

We seek a person who will learn to be a bishop while we learn to be a diocese.

Major Responsibilities and Skills

1.  To support the ongoing repair of the fabric of our diocesan community by:

  • being a connector to God, to the larger church, to our neighbors, and to ourselves as a community and a diocese.
  • being a reconciler through patience, compassionate listening, and conflict resolution.
  • being a collaborative consensus builder and developing strong teams to lead in the work of the diocese.
  • modeling clear understanding of and commitment to shared ministry and leadership.

2.  To discern the purpose and vision of our diocese by:

  • gathering teams to co-create a shared vision of God’s desire for our mission.
  • resourcing community vision into reality.
  • representing vision and being a champion of it to the community.

3.  To vitalize congregational ministry by:

  • building multi-cultural ministries in context of ethnic, socio-economic, age and/or gender-related diversity.
  • articulating the Christian faith in a clear, concise and inspiring manner, especially to those outside the church.
  • acting on clear understanding of the particular nature of the Episcopal church in the West.

4)  To strengthen our understanding and practice of stewardship by:

    • modeling and teaching the theology of stewardship, including time, talent and treasure.
    • mobilizing the resources of a community in faithful stewardship including pledge campaigns, capital campaigns, planned giving, and grant development.
