What We Did
During the last three years, our diocese has spoken clearly about the person we want for our next bishop. We voiced our needs, hopes and dreams during lay, clergy and all-diocese conferences, through the lay and clergy surveys, and with the work of the Diocesan Evaluation and Structure Committee. In August, 2006, the Standing Committee charged the BSC to identify four to six nominees who would be the best fit for our diocese, and we have done what we were asked to do. We sought the best, not to fill certain slots. Therefore, there were no geographic, age or gender criteria. Our sole objective was to find the best. To accomplish that, we looked for evidence that those who were discerning a call to be our bishop have already done what we need and want them to do. Our work was careful, thorough, and objective. We evaluated applications, interviews and references according to criteria that measured results and the process by which applicants attained those results. As we did our work, we felt the Holy Spirit among us in ways that surprised, delighted and amazed us.
Our selection criteria included:
- A proven record of growing at least one congregation as rector.
- Creativity in attracting the 18-35 generation to the church.
- Demonstrated good financial stewardship.
Other factors included a godly presence, a sense of humor, a warm personality, a sound theological education, good administrative skills, acceptance of all people, understanding of our diocese and its challenges, collaborative leadership, and ability to connect people, build consensus and resolve conflict.
How We Did It
| September 30, 2006 |
Developed and published the Diocesan Profile (www.edecr.org/profile/index.htm) |
| October 1, 2006 |
Published call for nominations and applications |
| December 1, 2006 |
58 applications were received by the close of the application period.
Each applicant submitted:
- Responses to four questions
- A resume
- The applicant’s Church Deployment Profile
|
| December 16, 2006 |
16 applicants were chosen to move forward in the process. |
January,
2007 |
Teams of 3-4 BSC members interviewed the 16 applicants by telephone. The teams evaluated the applicants in four areas:
- Motivation for ministry
- Leadership
- Ministry to all of the baptized
- Financial stewardship.
The four BSC nominees all scored 18 or better out of a possible 20 points. |
| February 3, 2007 |
Teams of 3-4 BSC members visited seven applicants in their home parishes. The teams interviewed 15-21 references, including current and former bishops, wardens, parish administrators, finance people, vestry members, and associated staff members. |
March 3,
2007 |
All seven applicants were invited for interviews with the BSC in San Jose. Two applicants discerned they were not called at this time to be our next bishop and withdrew at this point. Five candidates came to San Jose to meet with the entire Search Committee on March 19-21. In three-hour interviews, each candidate articulated how he/she manages conflict, answered specific questions relative to the suitability of his/her life and ministry as our Bishop, and answered 10 standard questions in areas the BSC felt are critical to the success of our next Episcopate. |
March 31,
2007 |
The BSC met with the Standing Committee to present the slate of four nominees for the electing convention for the third Bishop of the Diocese of El Camino Real. |
April 2,
2007 |
The Standing Committee announced the slate via our diocesan website and various news releases sent to local and national news sources. |
What Comes Next
Petition Process
Episcopal Church canon law requires the diocese to allow nominations “from the floor.” This is done through a petition process
(see www.edecr.org/bishopsearch/f/bpsearch-PetitionProcess.pdf) which allows time for background checks to be completed for petition nominees. The Petition Nominees were required to gather the appropriate number of signatures and to submit the three parts of the application that the regular search process required. The period designated by the Standing Committee for accepting applications and petitions for petition nominees was April 2–12, 2007.
Presentation Tours
All nominees who have passed the background checks will be invited to participate in the Presentation Tours for all of the nominees, which are scheduled for the week of June 4th.
Election of our Third Bishop
The Electing Convention will be held at York School, Monterey, on June 16, 2007.
