Bishop Search Committee Update
December 22, 2006
The Bishop Search Committee is ending the year with exciting progress in the search for our next bishop! Fifty-seven nominees submitted applications, and the committee has selected applicants for the first round of interviews. This diocese has been blessed with an outstanding array of candidates from all over the country. Each applicant comes to us with a faithful history of ministry. The range of gifts and experience reflected in the applications made the experience of reading them a rewarding and humbling experience.
During November and December, the committee focused on the process for selecting applicants for initial interviews. On November 18, the members met with their consultant, the Rev. Dr. Rob Voyle, to complete the process of developing criteria for reviewing the materials submitted by nominees. Then, as the first step in the selection process, every committee member reviewed each application using the criteria the team had developed. The second step was the group review of the applications. The committee gathered for a working retreat on December 1 and 2. After team-building work on Friday evening, the committee worked on Saturday to accomplish their first group review of applications. On December 16, they completed the group review and made a final selection of applicants for interviews.
Committee member are currently preparing the questions for the first interviews. At the next meeting, on January 6, they will meet again with Rob Voyle to prepare for the interview process. Following interviews in January, the committee will be ready to begin site visits in February. Finalists will be invited to meet with the whole committee in our diocese in March, and announcement of the slate of finalists is scheduled for the beginning of April.
The Bishop Search Committee is working hard to prepare for the selection of our next bishop, but everyone has an important part in the election. How can you help? First, by staying informed about the search process by reading updates, articles in Along the King's Highway, and communications at edecr.org/bishopsearch and distributed through each parish and mission. Second, by choosing delegates who are informed about the needs of the diocese, faith-filled and open to the movement of the Spirit in their lives. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, by praying for the Search Committee, for our diocese and for those who may be discerning a call to be with us as our next bishop. The prayer for the search can be found on our diocesan web site, here.
