Bishop Search Committee Update
May 07, 2007

The search for our next bishop is drawing to a close.  After months of intensive work, the diocese has a slate of five nominees.  In just a little more than a month, on June 16, a special meeting of the Convention will elect the third bishop for the Diocese of El Camino Real.  In these last few weeks before the meeting, we all still have important work to do in preparation for the election and for our transition to life with our new bishop.

Diocesan clergy began this phase of transition at their conference on April 23-25.  During the conference, Bishop Romero and the Rev. Rebecca McClain led the clergy in discussion that focused on preparing themselves for the transition and on receiving and supporting our new bishop.

All diocesan laity are invited to A Time of Transition, a lay conference led by the Rev. Rob Voyle, who has led many of our diocesan conferences in the last three years.  Diocesan delegates are especially encouraged to attend.  This conference is a time for the laity to come together for sharing, fellowship and looking toward the future.  The conference will be from 10:00am to 3:00pm on Saturday, May 19, at St. Paul’s in Salinas.  Registration, coffee and conversation will begin at 9:30 AM.  Lunch will be provided, and a $5 donation will be accepted.  Childcare is available with advance registration.  Please RSVP to Susan at 831-394-4465 or Susan@edecr.org

All people of the diocese are invited to meet the nominees for bishop during the Presentation Tours planned for June 6-10.  Delegates and alternates are particularly encouraged to attend one of the events.  However, anyone who is interested in learning more about the nominees for bishop is welcome.  These events give parishioners and clergy of the diocese an opportunity to hear all the nominees for the Bishop of El Camino Real respond to questions from the participating audience in a moderated format.  Those in attendance should participate with prayerful discernment and open hearts and minds to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

As we all prepare for our final step in discerning for the diocese, the Search Committee members ask that you pray for the Holy Spirit’s presence for us and for those who are discerning their call to serve with us as our next bishop.
