Guidelines for Nominees in the Diocese of El Camino Real

The election of a bishop is a process of prayerful discernment into which we all enter with hearts and minds open to guidance by the Holy Spirit. It is not a political campaign.   The clergy and delegates of our diocese are encouraged to become informed about the nominees, to participate in conversations within their congregations, and to pray for the nominees, the electors, and all of the people in our diocese.

The Standing Committee requests that:

1. Nominees refrain from giving any interviews related to their nomination for the episcopate to the media in their respective areas after the announcement of their nomination to the Diocese of El Camino Real's slate on April 2. It is appropriate, of course, to acknowledge that they are nominees, but we ask that they refer any other comments or inquiries to the Diocese of El Camino Real, 831-394-4465, Brian Nordwick.

2. Nominees refrain from visiting the diocese for any reason between the time of the announcement on April 2 and the June Presentations. In addition, we also ask any nominee from the diocese to refrain from any politicking by him/herself or others during this interim time.

3. Except for official communication with representatives of the Search, Transition or Standing Committees, nominees not engage in written or oral communication related to their nomination or the election with any persons in the Diocese of El Camino Real before the Presentations and in the time between the Presentations and the Electing Convention on June 16. Nominees will have the opportunity to make a statement during the Presentations. They are also welcome to distribute written materials at the time of the Presentations.

These requests are made in an effort to maintain a level playing field for all nominees in the process.

Ann Wright, President
For the Standing Committee
