General Convention 2006

Introducing Your Deputies:  Pat Waddell

June 27, 2006

Patrick, better known as Pat, has been a member of the deputation as either Alternate or Deputy since 1991 (that’s 6 meetings of the General Convention). He has served 4 of those as either an elected Deputy or advanced to Deputy when a Deputy withdrew. He is a member of St. Luke’s, Los Gatos, where he serves as parish liturgist, Eucharistic Minister, acolyte, and trainer of acolytes. He also serves the diocese as a member of the Commission on Constitution and Canons and as a member of the Trial Court. He was a member of the national Committee on Sexual Exploitation from 1991 to 1997, and helped draft the 1994 version of Title IV (Ecclesiastical Discipline).

At General Convention, he is a member of the Committee on Canons. This Committee not only is assigned many revisions of the Canons directly, but must review those resolutions which change the Canons but were assigned to other legislative Committees. He serves the Committee as Secretary for Document Editing, one of several Secretarial positions required for the Committee.

Canons must deal with a wide variety of proposals to alter the Canons. Some, such as the proposed revisions for Title III and Title IV, are large (the Title III revision ran 40 pages, the Title IV revision ran 35 pages). They must be carefully tracked to ensure that only language fully reviewed and agreed reaches the floor of either House for debate. To ensure this happens, one Secretary is assigned as overall document editor. Pat assumed this role for the second time in Columbus.
