General Convention 2006

Introducing Your Deputies:  Wendy Smith

June 17, 2006

The Rev. Wendy Smith, a three-time Deputy to General Convention, is rector of St. Thomas, Sunnyvale, and also serves the Diocese as a Director on the Corporation Board and an Examining Chaplain, and serves the wider church as a member of the School for Deacons Board of Trustees.

At General Convention, she is a member of the Education Committee and says, “I have been privileged to work on subcommittees which prepared legislation on education about domestic violence, opposing the use of the Bible to support oppression, especially slavery, and supporting the historically black colleges and universities.”

Wendy comments, “The Episcopal Committee on the Visual Arts has gathered and projected photos of Christian art during our worship, which has been deeply moving. I have been blessed by serving twice as a chalice-bearer at our daily Eucharists. I am grateful and proud.”

She also writes, “So far the dialogue about the Windsor Report has been conducted with respect and courtesy, as it was in 2003. We have had our consciousness raised about the fact that the Episcopal Church is an international church, with 14 national members in addition to the United States. We are the only church in the Anglican Communion which is not a national church.”
