Urgent Need for Medicine

May 2006

Although this appeal is dated 2006, the need is ongoing ... you can help!

Jonglei Province – Diocese of Bor
The Sudan

“Can the Churches help us? Children are dying”
“The rainy season has begun and the problem with malaria is critical especially among children who are becoming sick and dying. The whole region with 160,000 people is without medicine. USAID and the World Health Organization have informed us that no medicine will be available for some time because of lack of donations to their organizations. Can you see if the churches in the US can help us?”

Canon Mark Atem Thuc
Administrator for Kongor-Panyagoor region of the Diocese of Bor.

The situation is critical, especially where children under the age of 16 make up over three fourths of the population. The presence of mosquitoes, the outbreak of cholera together with multiple intestinal diseases due to unclear water has for thousands of children who are suffering from malaria, diarrhea and dehydration.

Dr. Isaias Chol Arui, Commissioner for Health in Jonglei Province has asked Canon Mark Atem Thuc, Commissary (Executive Officer) for the northern region of the Diocese of Bor, to seek $7000 in donations for medical supplies to be purchased in Nairobi and $3000 to transport them to Twic County.

Background
Sudan Organization for Rehabilitation and Development (SORD) of the Episcopal Diocese of Bor, Province of the Sudan established five Health Centers in Twic County through grants from USAID in 2005. They are located in Pageer, Marial, Pawel, Lualajokbill and Pongborong. These centers were established to augment the two levels of health facilities operated by the Twic County Health Department. There are approximately 160,000 people served in Twic County with more returning weekly through the repatriation program. Additional centers are being established in southern Bor Diocese in Konyong, Anytie, Machuch, Bydit and Jelek.
