Standing Committee Update

Much of the work of the Standing Committee in this interim period involves staying in touch with all parts of the diocese, as a part of the shared ministry which we all share. Through its liaisons, the Standing Committee receives reports all from diocesan committees as well as from the Bishop, Canon and Administrator.

Each member of the Standing Committee is a liaison to one or more of the diocese’s many committees. Liaisons attend their committee’s meetings and prepare a written report for the Standing Committee. In turn, they report to their committee on the work of the Standing Committee. A brief introduction of each Standing Committee members follows with their liaison responsibilities:

Joe Chouinard, member of St. James, Paso Robles: Joe has lived in California since 1997. He is a consulting Civil Engineer in the fields of water and wastewater treatment. He has been an active member of his parish, serving as member of the vestry and senior warden, the worship commission, columbarium committee, building and grounds committee, and is a Lay Eucharistic Minister and reader. He is married to Denise, who is the Secretary of Convention. He is presently on the Search Committee for the next Bishop and a member of DIEM (Department of Intercultural Evangelism and Mission). He is the liaison to DIEM from the Standing Committee.

Chris Creed, rector of St Francis, Willow Glen: Prior to attending the Church Divinity School of the Pacific (CDSP) Chris was in the U.S. Air Force (JAG), practiced law in San Francisco and worked in commercial and private banking in San Francisco and on the Peninsula. After graduation from CDSP in 1993 he served in the Diocese of California before coming to El Camino Real. He is married to Barbara, a board member of the Church Pension Group and also a lawyer. He is the convener of the Constitution and Canons Committee, a member of the Joint Process Committee, and served on the Editorial Board of “Along the King’s Highway” and the Diocesan Funding Review Committee. Chris is the Vice President of the Standing Committee. He is the liaison to the Corporation Board and serves as its President.

Keith Johnson, rector of St Andrew’s, Ben Lomond: Keith was born in New Orleans, and grew up as an Air Force ‘brat’. He attended the University of Illinois, where he played football before graduating with a B.A. in Political Science. He worked for the Social Security Administration for 14 years before attending Virginia Theological Seminary. He graduated in 2001. Keith is married and has two children. He came to St. Andrew’s in 2003, and has served on DIEM and the Conference Planning Team. He is the liaison to Diocesan Council.

Harriet Linville, rector of St. Peter’s, Morro Bay: Harriet is originally from Michigan, and attended the University of Michigan where she graduated as an English major. She taught Junior High Language Arts before being called to the priesthood. She attended CDSP and was ordained in Eastern Oregon. She moved to Morro Bay in 1996 when she became the rector of St. Peter’s. She is married to Warren, a retired educator. For recreation she rides her Tennessee Walking Horse, Dolly. This is her second term on the Standing Committee. She is the Diocesan Ecumenical Officer.

Linda Taylor, rector of St. Mark’s, Santa Clara: Linda is originally from Texas. She began her career as a nurse and eventually moved to the Bay Area. She began attending St. Andrew’s, Saratoga, discerned a call to ministry, and decided to become a priest. She attended CDSP. She loves painting, yoga, gardening and playing her harmonica. She has served on the Commission on Ministry (COM). This is her second year on the Standing Committee and serves as its Secretary. She is the liaison to the COM.

Graciela Velasquez, member of Our Lady of Guadalupe, San Jose: Graciela is from Mexico and has been the Parish Administrator for Guadalupe for 5 years. She has been a member of Diocesan Council and COM. She does volunteer work with high school sports programs, Stanford Hospital, and works with patients coming from Mexico for treatment in this country. She is a faithful supporter of this program, meeting these people and taking them to Sacramento for treatment. Graciela is a liaison to the COM.

Jerry Witherspoon, member of St. Jude’s, Cupertino: Jerry has been an active member of both his parish and the diocese for a number of years. He has been on the COM and served as Chair for 5 years. He is currently Chair of the Search Committee for the new Bishop, and member of the Diocesan Board of Chaplains. He is married to Susan and they are the guardians of a seven year old grandniece, Sarah. This is Jerry’s second term on the Standing Committee; he is the liaison to the ECR Foundation and the Corporation Board of Directors.

Ann Wright, member of St. Andrew’s, Saratoga: Ann has been an active member of both her parish and the diocese for a number of years. She worked for AT&T, LSI Logic, and was Executive Director of a non-profit before retiring in 2000. Since then she has served on the Episcopal Homes Foundation as well as being a board member of two other nonprofits. She is married to Max Wright, a deacon at St. Andrew’s. This is her second term on the Standing Committee, where she is serving as President. She has also been a member of the Strategic Planning Committee, the Conference Planning Team and the Diocesan Evaluation and Structure Committee.
